THE LABYRINTH
AT OLFACTORY FARM

WHAT IS A LABYRINTH?

A labyrinth is a geometrical pattern used for walking and to assist the consciousness.   A labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is deliberately meant to confuse the walker, they are full of starts, stops, dead ends and exits. Whereas a labyrinth only has one way in and one way out. When walking a labyrinth, you can always see the center, which is your destination. As you follow the circuitous path you free yourself to not think of where you are headed but rather move into a meditative state. The idea is to unwind and free your mind of stress & worry. The labyrinth can be used as a metaphor for one's journey in life.

How to Walk a Labyrinth

There are three stages to walking the labyrinth.  But keep in mind there is no right or wrong way to walk the path.

Stage 1: Releasing (letting go of the day)

Set an intention: "I’m walking today just to relax", "I’m walking to help myself figure out...", etc.

Stage 2: Receiving (listening to your inner voice)

Stay present in the moment. Free up your mind. Set an intention or just reflect if you wish.

If you are using the labyrinth to problem-solve you might ask yourself at each turn “What is my next step? What do I need to consider? Or What do I need right now?” When you reach the center, sit or stand there as long as you like. This is a place of reflection, meditation and prayer or just being.

Stage 3: Returning or Exiting

In some labyrinths you may walk back out the way you came or there may be an exit.

When you are ready to exit, you take back out into the world that which you have received. Listen to your heart, breathe slowly and stay focused.  Each labyrinth experience is different. It can be subtle or you may have a powerful reaction.

Our Labyrinth is A 60 foot Ceremonial Labyrinth. There are two entrances both heading to the center, then one exit. This type of labyrinth can also be used for wedding ceremonies, partnership, team building or as an aid to overcome problems in a relationship.
